CBD is the current talk of the town! There’s so much to CBD that we know, and much that has yet to be discovered. But here are some fun facts you might have known about this wellness plant.
Fact #1: CBD is Still CBD No Matter the Source
There is a myth out there that suggests CBD extracted from marijuana is more potent than CBD extracted from hemp. Consider that myth debunked! Both marijuana and hemp plants are of the same genus, Cannabis, and the same species, Cannabis sativa. There may be a difference in the plant’s cannabinoid count, but there is no difference in the plant’s cannabinoid effectiveness. In short, CBD extracted from hemp plants is just as effective as that from a marijuana plant. CBD is CBD to the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and it does not care where it comes from.
Fact #2: CBD Can Be Beneficial to Pets Even if They are Healthy
CBD is known to be helpful for pets who need a little extra love, but it’s also beneficial for healthy pets too! The endocannabinoid system (ESC) is found in all mammals. The ESC helps regulate appetite, mood, sleep, hormone production, pain, and a variety of other tasks. As your or your healthy pet’s body deals with day-to-day things, the ECS is always working to maintain a physiologic balance. Therefore, even when your pets are healthy, CBD can provide a little extra love to your furry friend.
Fact #3: Hemp is One of the Oldest Agricultural Crops
Historians and archeologists suggest that hemp was used as early as 12,000 years ago. Carl Sagan, an astronomer and cannabis advocate, claimed that cannabis laid the ground for agricultural civilization. Hemp was first cultivated by tribes in northern China as early as 8000 BC. It first appeared in North America in the early 1600s. Crops planted by the British were used to make rope, sails, and clothing. In the 1700s, farmers in the United States legally grew hemp, for medicine and paper production.
Fact #4: CBD is One of 115 Cannabinoids in the Cannabis Plant
CBD is the second most abundant cannabinoid. But did you know, outside of CBD and THC, there are dozens of more cannabinoids occurring in trace amounts? Similar to CBD, these cannabinoids can engage with the endocannabinoid system and provide an array of their effects.
Some of the most talked-about cannabinoids include:
- Cannabichromene (CBC)
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Cannabinol (CBN)
- Cannabidivarin (CBDV)
- Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta8-THC)
- Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA)
These cannabinoids have recently garnered the attention of medical researchers. Many studies conducted have pointed to them as potential natural remedies.
