CBD and Heart Health

CBD & Heart Health: Is There a Connection?

Cannabidiol, or simply CBD, is one of the main cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t make you feel high. Cannabinoids affect your endocannabinoid system, which works with your body to keep you in homeostasis. When the body gets out of whack with inflammation or disease, CBD may give your endocannabinoid system a boost to do its job as a body regulator. In the past couple of years, CBD has been gaining attention on its helpful properties and use. It’s been touted as a substance that can have a positive effect on conditions like anxiety, chronic pain, and even what we’re focusing on today, heart disease.

What the Research Suggests About CBD & Heart Health

Let’s talk about high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for hypertensive heart disease. Your blood pressure tends to rise under stress, but some research suggests a dose of CBD can lessen that spike.

In a 2009 study, rats were subjected to stressful situations. This in turn caused their blood pressure and heart rate to increase. When given a dose of CBD, it lowered their blood pressure and heart rate.

In a 2017 study, healthy volunteers underwent stressful situations. Half were given a dose of CBD and the other half placebo. The CBD ended up lowering their blood pressure, compared to volunteers given a placebo.

However, a 2017 review of 25 studies found that there’s no evidence that CBD provides similar results under non-stressful conditions.

While more research is needed to say for sure, CBD may be useful in lowering blood pressure and heart rate under stress. Always talk to your doctor before using CBD if you have high blood pressure.

Using CBD for Your Heart

As with any other form of medication, doses will vary from one person to the next, make sure you read the labels for recommended take or consult with your doctor. As stated, it’s always best to consult with your doctor before taking CBD, especially if you are already suffering from a form of heart disease and are taking prescribed medication. CBD could affect your current medication and lead to complications. Moreover, a professional can guide you into choosing the right CBD for you!

Lastly, CBD should not be your only answer to your heart health problems. A healthy diet combined with a regular exercise schedule is critical to enjoying days when stress and anxiety are not present.
